Reno is the city that never sleeps or is that New York? Either way one thing's for sure, the University of Nevada, Reno won't be sleeping the night before finals. To keep eating and studying here are some of the best places in Reno, open twenty-four hours a day or late in the night, to get in that last bit of cramming.
As you slowly make it into the wee hours of the morning you'll most likely be slurping hot, caffeine-filled drinks.
1. For an upscale, so-fancy-you-don't-know-what-spoon-to-stir-your-coffee-with café, try out the Peppermill Coffee Shop. Yes, it is actually called the Coffee Shop. Also at the Peppermill is Café Espresso, which closes at 11 p.m. Friday and Saturdays.
2. If you want to conform to a company whose business is booming, Starbucks is your the best bet. The 24-hour Starbucks is on Kietzke Lane but there are plenty others close to campus (California and South Virginia, 5th and Nevada) open until nine or ten.
3. Maybe you'd like to try somewhere more diverse. In that case, try Tivoli Gardens at the Eldorado casino. Tivoli Gardens serves gourmet coffee as well as Italian, American, Chinese, and Mexican food but its overall atmosphere is pretty Italian.
Maybe you're one of those people who need more sustenance than just coffee to really give your brain a workout. After all, good carbohydrates offer a healthier energy than caffeine does to keep you studying all night.
4. When you're ready for a break from all that studying, go downtown to The Reno Little Nugget Diner (not the Nugget Casino out in Sparks). What this casino's diner lacks in atmosphere and size, the food makes up for in deliciousness. It's the home of the world famous awful-awful burger - whose name is definitely a misnomer - and it's a fantastic place to hang out with friends, get rid of your stress, and prepare for your second wind of hitting the books.
5. The Purple Parrot inside the Atlantis is a great place to order a nice meal with a side of pass-all-your-finals. The casual setting makes it easy to relax and get through studying without too much stress.
6. If you're like most college students, your best place to study might be somewhere you won't have to spend a lot of cash. In that case, go to Denny's. There's a wide variety of food to choose from and if your waitress takes a long time, that's just extra time to study!
Maybe you don't like to stay up quite so late to study. Just for you, I've found a few places that are open late, but not too late.
7. Sometimes a hankerin' for Chinese food just can't be helped. Decorated to justify its name, the Golden Palace is just the place. Delicious food and a lovely atmosphere are exactly what you need to get the ball rolling on that studying. Plus it's downtown - not too far from campus. The Golden Palace is open until midnight Sunday through Thursday, and three in the morning on Friday and Saturday.
8. Can't get enough of that Chinese food? Want to add in a little more variety too? Then the Hoa-Phat Vietnamese-Chinese Restaurant is the restaurant for you. The food's not only extremely appetizing, but healthy. The Hoa-Phat is open until midnight Sunday through Thursday, and 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
9. If you want to go somewhere with character, there is nowhere that compares to the Pneumatic Diner. The menu is all vegetarian, but even the most adamant meat-lovers can't get enough of this funky cool restaurant. The Pneumatic Diner is open until 11 p.m. every night, but it will definitely be worth the trouble of taking a bit of an early break in your studying. There are neon lights, posters and paintings, and everything else you can think of adorning these walls. There is no reason anyone should miss out on such a unique part of Reno.
So you've finished studying and finals are upon you. Now what? Well, you have to take good care of yourself. Make sure you get plenty of sleep the night before each final. And, the morning before each final, make sure you get a good, hearty breakfast. After all, nothing will distract you more during a test than a growling stomach.
10. Peg's Glorified Ham and Eggs. Need I say more? Glorified is right, and for good reason. Peg knows how to serve a fantastic breakfast that will fill you up and keep you full all throughout your final. They open at six thirty every morning, so you'll have plenty of time to relax over breakfast and still get to class on time. And they're open until two everyday, so you could even go back for lunch!
