Virtual Job Fair a Success
by Matt Fiske on 02 Sep 2007

The University of Nevada, Reno's Career Development Center said on August 31, 2007 that it received over 2500 unique users for its four-day online event, the Virtual Job Fair.
"This is the second time we've done this," said Erin Mathews, career development facilitator. "It seems to be a great way to go about (recruiting)."
The VJF, located at www.unr.edu/career/VJF.html, focused on part-time employment, and ran from August 27 to August 31. Twenty-eight off campus employers and 14 on-campus employers participated.
"The purpose was to reach a wider range of people," said Mathews. "(The fair) brought in more people than if we'd had a traditional fair."
The VJF allowed users to browse job postings without needing to register, access a resume writing workshop and to practice interviewing live with a counselor via an instant message video stream.
"Technology has really moved us forward," said Kevin Gaw, Career Development's director. "Students and employers now can engage with this kind of recruiting format more successfully than ever before."
Gaw said that the success of the VJF will allow for future virtual events.
Career Development's Career Navigator system, available all-year round, requires registration, which is free. Career Navigator mostly focuses on obtaining long-term careers or internships, whereas the VJF was only for part-time jobs.
Career Development remains available to assist students with job, career and internship-related resources both at Room 200 in the Thompson building and online at www.unr.edu/career.
Career Navigator, located at www.unr.edu/career/Jobs.html, also contains up to date job postings and resources to assist with resume writing and cover letters.
