This Week in Music: Ty Segall

This week, Nick Rattigan covers a collection of Ty Segall singles, and again gives a summary of this week's other new music releases.

Ty Segall - Singles Collection (2007-2011)

As the semester comes to an end most of us finally start doing those projects that were assigned at the beginning of the semester. You know, the ones that should be done one step at a time throughout a long process of weekends so that it doesn’t all smack you in the back of the head when the due date comes up. Yet, we are college students and know better than to manage our time efficiently. The stress of completing these projects in a matter of days or nights are more stressful than any teen or 20 something needs in their life. On top of the stress that already comes with being this age it can drive a person mad. That is why I suggest this album. Ty Segall has been one of the poster children for Goner Records since 2007. And after this year’s Goodbye Bread it is good to go back and listen to some classic in your face Ty Segall. Drawing from obvious influences of 1950s rock n’ roll Segall put his own punk twist on it. If any of you attended when he came to Reno last semester for the Holland Project would know the genius of this man. However if you have not this CD is a good place to start. It is a singles collection so along with the hits you get some pretty awesome unreleased songs and demos. So please, if you are feeling the end of the semester stress, download this album, turn it to max volume, and destroy something beautiful. (B+)

Other New Music

SUMMERCAMP: Straight out of a John Hughes movie, Summer Camp supplies to poppy-fun 80s music. Yet, like the grand majority of 80s albums, the best song is the single. (C) Dive - “Human” Single: Fans of Beach Fossils have to check this one out. Dreamy, poppy, and a great song to reflect on life. (A+) THEE OH SEES - Carrion Crawler/The Dream EP: This new double EP has all the good Thee Oh Sees songs, but most of them only run about two minutes two long. (C+) Los Campesinos - Hello Sadness: The fourth album of Los Campesinos makes that upbeat and happy feel that they are so known for sound like most albums we can find in our 8th grade sobbing music. (D) Spank Rock - Everything is Boring and Everybody is a Fucking Liar: This album is truly terrible. If you don’t believe me just try and get past the first song. (F)   Nick Rattigan is the music director for UNR's Wolf Pack Radio and co-host of No Future Radio, 7-8 pm Tuesdays at www.wolfpackradio.org
