“(Women) are becoming very equal in every way and I worry that women will overcome men in some ways,” she says. “I think it is most important that we remember that what we have been struggling for is equality and not superiority.”

Like Sifuentes, Martinez is involved in NOW CAN. While not an official member of the club, Martinez had the idea of NOW CAN mimicking the parade of Alice Paul in 1917 for the 2008 presidential election.

Last semester the members of NOW CAN dressed as suffragettes and marched through campus. Wearing purple sashes identical to those the suffragettes wore, saying “VOTES FOR WOMEN” in gold cloth letters, they marched through the Quad and on toward the Joe Crowley Student Union to cast their ballots.

While feminism has come a long way since its roots in America more than a hundred years ago, its future is rocky.
